Trek to Ausangate

This hike to Ausangate Mountain (6384m), offers glimpses of high altitude wildlife and inhabitants of the area. It is a perfect place to escape from the bustle of the modern world. Trek to Ausangate offers ice walls, glaciers frozen rivers, waterfalls and numerous springs of hot and medicinal underground water. The traveler will also find beautiful views of the surroundings, looking down in the fertile valleys and mountains of Vilcanota. These snowed mountains are located towards the southeast to protect Canchis Valley.

Pick up from your hotel early in the morning. We will travel by road to the northern side  of the Ausangate mountain, which can be seen from the road,  passing through small high andes villages. We will arrive at Tinky village, where we will have our first camp and acclimatization to the altitude. 

After breakfast we start our hike, toward our encounter with the Ausangate mountain.  We will hike  along the banks of the Upis River which are also called Mapacho and that  point will mark the beginning of Madre de Dios River, in the Manu National Park.

The trek will be soft  with a slight ascent going through small communities along the way, we will see lots of alpacas and llamas. Afternoon arrival to Upis village, there we will  enjoy the thermal waters -hotsprings - near the camp in Upis.

After breakfast we will start our  hike to the first mountain pass that is located at 4,500 masl. known as Arapa Apacheta, after that we will have the opportunity to see beautiful lakes.

We will arrive at Lago Negro, named for the depth of its waters, the other lakes have very beautiful colors: turquoise and blue.  Lunch.   Also  we will have  a beautiful view of the Ausangate mountain. In the afternoon, we will continue our hije  through  the second mountain pass known as Ausangate pass, and then we will descend to our third camp which will be  in Ausangate Cocha.

After breakfast we will start our trek to the Palomani pass that is located at 5200 masl. Here you will feel like to be on the top of the world and feel the sky nearby. After a brief rest,  we will begin our walk down to the sector point, known as Pampas Phinaya where we will  have lunch and  will appreciate an ancient culture technique: the ridges covering the ground in order to give warmth to the products grown here in the cold nights.  After lunch we will begin to climb to a place called Jhampa that will be our campsite, with a view of the other peaks that are behind the Ausangate mountain.

We will have a delisious breakfast with a beautiful sunrise, so we will receive the first rays of the sun in our camp. After that  we start our trek, spending the last mountain pass known as Qhampa pass, which is located at 4900 masl. Then we will descend down to Ninaparayoc where we will see many beautiful colorful lakes, having lunch,  hereafter a brief rest, we will  begin descending toward our final camp near to the thermal baths of the area, where we will enjoy a delicious dinner.

After a beautiful night and a very comforting breakfast, we will start our descent of about 3 hours of walking towards Tinky, where we will take lunch to return to Cusco where you will arrive at 3 pm.
